BIOGRAPHY
Timothy Peter Armstrong was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1981. He studied Fine Art’s with a major in Sculpture at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand.
Armstrong’s current practice leverages the canon western art history to unravel and atomise significant art works to their component parts. Recontextualising shape, form, depth and surface to unearth their structural essence or visual soul. In this process, he creates new topologies that invite the viewer to make their own meaning. Free from the constraints of doctrine and representation, his pieces give permission to the audience to indulge in aesthetic autonomy as if they were an alien being or infant taking in the world for the first time should they chose.
Early in his career, Armstrong’s first exhibition; A Christmas Story explored through painting sculpture and video installation, the unsettling mix of rampant consumerism and idolatry that acts as a sinew over time to the festivals and rituals of old, that lay deep in collective memory. His second exhibition Evolution Anxiety explored through painting, our cohabitation of the planet with animals. Detailing the tensions, power dynamics and symbiosis of sentient beings.
Armstrong now resides in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand and has worked as a secondary school teacher for many years. He has taught subjects including; painting, photography, art history, architectural and product design.
